Poll: Your Interest in the Olympics
The Olympics are here again. Just how interested are you in the Olympics game, an international gathering of the world's best amateur athletes, who are in it for no money or corporate sponsorships, and who are exposed to the highest level of fair competition presided over by the least-biased judges and referees in order to arrive at a final medal count that best reflects the total athletic prowess and opportunity of each nation?
(Okay, that was little bit sarcastic. To be fair to the Olympics, sports, after all, are at their core about inequality.)

As often happens with egalitarianism, some are more equal than others.
ReplyDeleteWe have watched some of the coverage of the Olympics, but we are far from "glued" to our TV. It is amazing to watch what these athletes can do and almost equally amazing to hear the commentators rip to shreds the tiny little mistakes the rest of us only dream of being able to make ... something like, "Oh man, did you see that?! Her feet weren't in perfect alignment as she entered the water after doing a reverse quadruple!" (Implying, "what a loser!")
I think I'm more struck with each Olympics how humanistic it all is at its base. The Olympics Games are about pushing the limits of what people can do physically. I'm also struck with how much into themselves some, but fortunately not all, of the athletes are. Some do what they for the glory of their country; far fewer do it for the glory of God; and many (most?) do it for their own glory ... to prove something. That's pretty much what I heard Bolt say last night.
Thanks for making me think about this whole thing and to crystalize my random thoughts about the Olympics.
